How to extend battery life? Electric construction equipment maintenance has a trick!

Daniel Lu, Ailisheng

The popularity of electric construction equipment is increasing, but its unique design and fuel requirements can be challenging to maintain. In this article, we will provide guidance on essential maintenance skills for electric construction equipment.

How to extend battery life? Electric construction equipment maintenance has a trick! 1

1. Avoid misunderstanding the activation process of modern lithium-ion batteries

Modern lithium-ion batteries are factory-tested and do not require the so-called 'full discharge' activation process.

2. Optimise charging habits

2.1 Avoid deep discharging: Avoid draining the battery to very low levels (less than 20%) and try to avoid frequent draining to the limit, as deep discharging will damage the battery's health.

2.2 Overcharging: It is not recommended to charge to 100%, as most charging ports will automatically switch to trickle charge mode when the battery is close to full capacity. This can cause the battery to be in a high-pressure state. It is recommended to charge to 80% to 90%, and to keep the battery power between 20% and 90%, which is the most comfortable 'working range' for lithium batteries. This is the optimal working range for lithium batteries.

2.3 Regular full charging: While it is generally advisable to avoid frequent full charging, periodically charging the battery can help calibrate it and enhance the accuracy of the battery management system (BMS).

3. Temperature Management

3.1 Avoid temperature extremes: High temperatures accelerate battery ageing, while low temperatures affect battery performance. Ideally, avoid charging or parking in extreme temperatures.

3.2 Use air-conditioning: In hot weather, use the air-conditioning to cool down, and in cold weather, use the preheat function to keep the battery within an optimal temperature range.

4. Daily Driving Habits

4.1 Gentle Driving:

Avoid frequent sharp acceleration and braking to reduce the impact on the battery and extend its lifespan.

4.2 Reasonable planning of use:

To ensure optimal performance and reduce energy consumption, use the operating conditions and production requirements for reasonable planning, avoiding unnecessary use.

5. Maintenance and Inspection

5.1 Regularly check the battery status: check the battery health status regularly through the vehicle's diagnostic system or professional service centre.

5.2 Maintain charging equipment:

ensure that chargers and cables are clean and in good working condition, and avoid using damaged charging equipment.

6. Storing the BatteryProper storage:

If the vehicle is not expected to be used for a long period, it is recommended to keep the battery charge at about 50% and check and adjust the charge level regularly.

7. Use high-quality charging equipment

Choose reliable quality charging posts and charging cables. High-quality charging equipment can provide more stable current and voltage and reduce the shock to the battery during charging.

8. Maintaining tyre pressure correctly is also important.

Ensure that tyre pressure is in line with the manufacturer's recommendations, as correct tyre pressure can reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
